Xolo held significant influence within the broader mass democratic movement (MDM). He served as the current district treasurer for the South African Communist Party (SACP)—a vital alliance partner to the ANC—and was previously the regional chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Alfred Nzo. His sudden death represents a major blow to community development structures and local activism in the area.
According to ANC Alfred Nzo regional spokesperson Lungisile Mzanywa, the local political infrastructure is deeply traumatized by the event. Mzanywa noted that while political assassinations are frequently reported in other provinces, such brutality is highly unusual for their specific district. The incident has shattered the region’s relative peace, forcing local structures to confront a crisis they previously only witnessed from afar in the national news.
The ambush in the Eastern Cape arrives on the heels of another high-profile political killing. Just days prior, Sbusiso Khwela, an ANC eThekwini councillor, was fatally shot near Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal on a Thursday. This rapid succession of violence against public servants has raised serious questions regarding the safety of community leaders, particularly as the country gears up for future local government elections.
While the exact motive remains under police investigation, the regional ANC leadership is demanding swift and decisive action. Mzanywa urged law enforcement to deploy maximum resources to uncover the truth behind the ambush. The spokesperson made it clear that if the assassination is proven to be politically motivated, the party will not hesitate to purge any “undesirable elements” or internal “shenanigans” that may have orchestrated the hit.
