KWAZULU-NATAL — Law enforcement officials have made significant strides in resolving the Bonginkosi Mbatha murder, apprehending two additional individuals connected to the fatal shooting of the 51-year-old CPF member. The recent arrests, executed during a high-precision intelligence sweep, bring the total number of accused individuals to three as authorities tighten the net around those responsible for the springtime tragedy.
On Tuesday, 11 August 2026, Zululand District police launched a coordinated manhunt that successfully tracked down two 30-year-old men. Confirming the success of the sweep, Zululand District Police Spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Dlamini highlighted the critical role of actionable intelligence in locating the fugitives who had been evading authorities since the victim’s death.
The first breakthrough occurred in Hlobane, where detectives intercepted one of the men while he was visiting his girlfriend. Following his detention, the suspect guided investigators to a stash located in the KwaMnyathi district. There, authorities unearthed a concealed firearm along with a cache of hidden ammunition.
Simultaneously, tactical teams moved on a separate location in Ulundi, raiding a hideout to secure the second 30-year-old suspect.
Both men will now join a 25-year-old co-accused who was originally detained in the immediate aftermath of the Sizana area resident’s assassination on 6 May 2026. The trio is slated for their first appearance at the Vryheid Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.
Colonel Dlamini noted that the criminal probe remains wide open and highly active. Forensic experts are currently running ballistic analyses on the seized KwaMnyathi weaponry to check for matches against other unsolved regional offenses. Furthermore, prosecutors have indicated that the current docket is not finalized, warning that supplementary counts could be levied against the trio as detectives uncover more evidence.
