KWAZULU-NATAL — A major Durban human trafficking arrest has dismantled a severe exploitation ring, placing a 65-year-old local businessman in custody. The suspect stood before the Durban Magistrates’ Court to answer to a docket of grave offenses—including kidnapping, sexual assault, and trafficking in persons (TIP)—after a precision raid orchestrated by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation division.
The syndicate’s downfall was triggered by modern technology and quick thinking. According to a Hawks spokesperson, the breakthrough occurred when one of the four captive women covertly transmitted a WhatsApp live-location pin to her boyfriend. He immediately contacted law enforcement, enabling a specialized police task team to track the digital breadcrumbs to a secluded property in Durban North and liberate the victims, all of whom were originally from Eldorado Park in Johannesburg.
The investigation revealed a long-running deception that began in February 2022. The four young women were initially lured by the promise of legitimate work selling SIM cards to patrons at a private casino. Enticed by guarantees of covered transportation and lodging, they agreed to relocate to the coast.
The trap officially closed on March 2, 2022, when the victims were transported to the Durban North residence. A Hawks spokesperson noted that upon arrival, the women were abruptly told their employment terms had drastically shifted. The promised sales jobs were scrapped, and the victims were instead subjected to physical sexual exploitation and forced to perform on illicit online platforms.
Adding to the brutality of the operation, investigators allege that the syndicate’s ringleader visited the property to personally “interview” the captives. During this visit, the boss allegedly sexually assaulted one of the women.
In the aftermath of the dramatic rescue, Durban-based Serious Organised Crime detectives launched a sweeping probe. Their diligent investigative work culminated in an arrest warrant being executed on August 11, 2026, taking the 65-year-old primary suspect into custody.
Following his initial court appearance on August 12, 2026, the businessman remains in state custody. He is slated to return to the dock on Friday, August 21, 2026, where he will formally apply for bail.
Meanwhile, the hunt is far from over. Law enforcement officials confirmed that active investigations are ongoing to track and apprehend five additional accomplices directly tied to the trafficking network.
