MPUMALANGA — Law enforcement officials have delivered a major setback to the illegal fuel trade in Mpumalanga following a successful Delmas diesel bust that resulted in the arrest of two suspects. The high-stakes operation recovered an estimated 4,500 litres of suspected stolen diesel, dismantling a coordinated transport convoy before the illicit cargo could reach its destination.
The interception occurred at approximately 22:50 on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, when joint patrols spotted a highly suspicious setup on the N12 highway near Arbor, heading toward Delmas. Officers observed a white truck hauling a heavy-duty fuel tanker being closely shadowed by a grey Toyota Fortuner. Recognizing the convoy-style escort as a common tactic used by organized criminal networks to protect illicit shipments, authorities moved in to pull the vehicles over.
Instead of complying, both drivers fled the scene, triggering a multi-vehicle pursuit that required immediate tactical backup. The chase was ultimately brought to a successful conclusion through seamless inter-unit cooperation. Members of the Delmas Crime Prevention Unit managed to safely immobilize and stop the heavy tanker, while separate pursuit teams tracked down and intercepted the fleeing Toyota Fortuner shortly after.
Both the truck and its escort were impounded and transported to the local police precinct to aid in a deeper forensic investigation. During interrogations, the truck’s driver attempted to legitimize the haul, claiming he had legally purchased the fuel. However, his alibi quickly unraveled when he presented an outdated invoice. Investigators noted glaring discrepancies on the document, which featured mismatched financial totals and incorrect litre quantities that did not align with the physical cargo.
The seized haul, valued at approximately R126,000, has been secured as evidence. Both suspects have been formally charged with Possession of Suspected Stolen Property, alongside Reckless and Negligent Driving. They remain in custody and are scheduled to face the Delmas Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
Addressing the successful takedown, a Spokesperson for Mpumalanga SAPS Management publicly commended the collaborative efforts of the Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Team and the Delmas Crime Prevention Unit. The Spokesperson highlighted that this exceptional level of vigilance and teamwork is exactly what is required to identify, intercept, and dismantle the sophisticated syndicates driving the illegal transportation and trade of fuel across the province.
