EASTERN CAPE — As freezing temperatures sweep across the region, authorities have issued multiple South Africa weather warnings, advising residents in the Eastern Cape and surrounding provinces to prepare for severe cold, damaging winds, and high fire risks.
Municipalities across the Eastern Cape are bracing for chilly conditions, with interior regions expected to see cloudy skies and morning fog. Overall conditions will remain fine but cool to cold, with temperatures dropping to very cold levels along the Drakensberg and its adjacent areas. The specific municipalities affected include Emalahleni, Sakhisizwe, Senqu, Elundini, and Matatiele.
According to the official weather service spokesperson, coastal winds will begin as light to moderate north-easterly breezes before freshening from the south in the afternoon.
A Yellow Level 2 warning has been activated for damaging winds. The spokesperson noted that these powerful gusts could reduce visibility through dust storms and cause localized damage to temporary structures. This alert specifically targets the northern sections of the West Coast District, the Witzenberg Local Municipality in the Western Cape, and the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape.
In the Northern Cape, residents can expect evening fog along the coastline. The western parts will remain fine, cool, and warm, while the eastern areas will experience partly cloudy, windy, and cool to cold weather. Coastal winds in these regions are forecast by the spokesperson to be moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly, shifting to light to moderate north-westerly by the afternoon.
Beyond the cold and wind, the weather authority spokesperson highlighted extremely high fire danger conditions. This severe risk applies to the Nama-Khoi and Hantam Local Municipalities in the Northern Cape, as well as the Matzikama and Cederberg Local Municipalities in the Western Cape.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the meteorological spokesperson indicated that the outlook for Friday and Saturday will bring fine but cold conditions across the central parts of the country. Friday will see partly cloudy and cool weather in most other regions, with isolated showers predicted along the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
