NORTHERN CAPE — Law enforcement officials are praising a successful Kimberley drug arrest that removed dangerous narcotics and illegal proceeds from the local community. The incident, which began as a routine observation of suspicious behavior, ultimately led to the seizure of suspected cocaine, Khat, and a vehicle linked to the illicit trade.
The breakthrough occurred on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, along Warren Street in the De Beers suburb. A police officer attached to the Provincial Operational Response Services noticed two men inside a passing car acting erratically. After pulling the vehicle over and identifying himself, the officer requested and received consent to search the automobile.
Hidden within the car, authorities uncovered packets of what is believed to be cocaine and Khat, carrying an estimated street value of R1,500. Investigators also located a quantity of cash believed to be generated from illegal drug sales. Consequently, a 41-year-old man was taken into custody.
During the processing of the suspect, the individual could not produce valid identification or proper immigration paperwork. As a result, he faces additional charges for violating the Immigration Act alongside the primary drug dealing allegations. Police also impounded the car, citing its direct use in facilitating the crimes.
The swift action drew high praise from regional command. Major General Gabathata Makgari, the District Commissioner of Frances Baard, highlighted the officer’s exceptional alertness in thwarting the local distribution network.
“The proliferation of illicit drugs remains a serious concern, as the availability and distribution of drugs can contribute to substance abuse, violence and other forms of criminality within communities,” Major General Makgari stated. “This arrest demonstrates the importance of vigilant policing and proactive interventions aimed at disrupting the drug supply chain.”
This bust aligns with a broader, aggressive strategy by the Northern Cape SAPS to eradicate drug trafficking. Authorities have pledged to ramp up intelligence-led operations and targeted raids to protect vulnerable populations from the devastating effects of substance abuse.
The accused is slated to face a judge at the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court in the near future.
