LAMBERTS BAY — A rapid law enforcement response to a violent Lamberts Bay liquor store robbery has led to the apprehension of five individuals and the seizure of an illegal firearm. The successful bust occurred when officers tracked down the suspects’ getaway vehicle shortly after the Burrel Street premises was held up at gunpoint.
The frightening incident took place at approximately 19:05 on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. According to a SAPS spokesperson, the shop’s owner was busy assisting patrons when four unknown men suddenly breached the storefront. The intruders immediately commanded everyone inside to lie face-down on the floor while they demanded cash.
While three of the assailants ransacked the cash register, a fourth individual brandished a firearm, pressing it against the business owner’s head and issuing verbal threats. Fortunately, none of the patrons sustained physical injuries during the hostage-like situation. The criminals ultimately fled the scene with the complainant’s personal mobile phone, an undisclosed sum of money from the till, and various alcoholic beverages taken directly from the shelves. The robbers escaped while the victims were still forced to remain prone on the floor. Once the coast was clear, the owner immediately contacted emergency services.
Following the distress call, a Piketberg police spokesperson confirmed that local units received a critical bulletin regarding the armed robbery. The alert indicated that the perpetrators were fleeing toward the Piketberg jurisdiction in a white Hyundai SUV.
Acting on this intelligence, patrol units located the suspect vehicle parked at a local petrol station. Officers swiftly moved in, halting the SUV and taking the five male occupants into custody.
A subsequent search of the vehicle and the suspects yielded a massive haul of evidence linking them to the Lamberts Bay liquor store robbery. Authorities confiscated a firearm loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, a knife, five mobile phones, multiple bottles of whisky, and a quantity of cash believed to be the stolen proceeds.
The five suspects, whose ages range from 19 to 36, were transported and detained at the Piketberg SAPS holding cells.
Police officially opened multiple dockets in connection with the 13 August 2026 incident. Charges include business robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, illegal possession of ammunition, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The accused are scheduled to make their first court appearance to face these charges on Monday, 17 August 2026.
