FREE STATE – Law enforcement authorities in Welkom have successfully intercepted a major contraband shipment, resulting in the seizure of illicit cigarettes valued at R6.2 million. The targeted operation, executed by the Welkom K9 Unit, culminated in the arrest of a 57-year-old foreign national male suspected of violating the Counterfeit Goods Act.
The breakthrough occurred on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, when the Welkom K9 Unit acted on credible intelligence regarding the transportation of illegal tobacco products to a specific residential address. This actionable information was rapidly operationalised, directing officers to a property situated in Jim Fouchè Park, Welkom.
Upon securing lawful access to the premises, law enforcement officials uncovered a substantial volume of boxed goods. Immediate preliminary investigations conducted at the scene verified that the contents were indeed counterfeit cigarettes, prompting the full confiscation of the merchandise.

She reiterated that authorities remain committed to aggressively dismantling contraband distribution networks through the rigorous and continued application of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
The detained individual remains in custody and is scheduled to face formal charges in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in the near future.
