EASTERN CAPE – Lelethu Nkosana, 27, has been handed dual life sentences by the Gqeberha High Court for the murder and rape of eight-year-old Veronique May. The sentencing, finalized on Monday, 17 August 2026, brings legal closure to a deeply tragic case that has drawn significant attention from the Eastern Cape community and law enforcement agencies.
The judicial process began after Veronique was reported missing by her relatives at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Kamesh station on Sunday, 05 October 2025. The SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Kariega promptly initiated a search operation. Acting on critical intelligence regarding the last known individual seen with the child, investigators located and questioned the suspect. On Monday, 06 October 2025, Nkosana led authorities to a residential property on De Booi Street in Langa, where the young girl’s body was discovered.
Following a comprehensive investigation and subsequent prosecution, the High Court found Nkosana guilty on all charges. The presiding judge imposed a three-year prison term for housebreaking, alongside two separate life imprisonment terms for rape and murder. The court ruled that these sentences will run concurrently. Furthermore, in accordance with legal protocols for such offenses, Nkosana’s details have been officially entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, praised the swift and diligent work of the investigative team, which was spearheaded by Warrant Officer Mbulelo Grootboom. Brigadier Ngalo emphasized the broader implications of the ruling for community safety and the justice system’s stance on gender-based violence.
“The loss of a child is devastating, and this sentence demonstrates that SAPS will continue to pursue perpetrators of crimes against children and ensure that they are held accountable,” Brigadier Ngalo stated.
In the wake of this sentencing, the SAPS has reiterated its appeal to the public. Authorities are urging communities to maintain heightened vigilance, actively safeguard minors, and immediately report any suspicious activities or intelligence related to crimes against children to local law enforcement.
