IKAMVELIHLE — A rapid tactical response to an Ikamvelihle business robbery has resulted in the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of illegal firearms, following a dramatic high-speed pursuit in the Nelson Mandela Bay region.
The incident unfolded on Monday, 24 August 2026, at approximately 07:50, when Ikamvelihle SAPS shift members were tipped off about an active hold-up at a neighborhood tavern situated on Mkombe Street. Law enforcement personnel were immediately dispatched to the coordinates.
As officers neared the location, they spotted a silver-grey Toyota Starlet speeding away from the vicinity. A vehicular pursuit was initiated, ultimately forcing the suspects to halt on Mpunzi Street in the NU1 sector of Ikamvelihle. Upon abandoning the car, five individuals scattered on foot. Police successfully detained three of the fleeing suspects, while a manhunt remains underway for the two who evaded capture.
Investigators searching the abandoned vehicle uncovered a cache of suspected stolen goods and weapons. The haul included two firearms, two empty magazines, and eight cartridges, all of which have been forwarded to a forensic laboratory for detailed ballistic examination. Additionally, officers recovered an undisclosed sum of cash and various liquor products estimated to be worth R20,000.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Ikamvelihle business robbery was executed by four armed men who stormed the establishment. The perpetrators allegedly restrained the complainant by tying their hands, demanded money, and ransacked the premises before making off with cash, groceries, alcohol, and the victim’s wedding ring.
The three detained suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 23, are currently facing business robbery charges. The Toyota Starlet has been impounded to aid the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also probing potential connections between this group and other criminal incidents across the Swartkops, Ikamvelihle, and Motherwell jurisdictions. The trio is scheduled to appear at the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court later this week, where further charges may be added as the investigation progresses.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brig Loyiso Ngalo, publicly praised the responding officers for their decisive and rapid intervention. Brig Ngalo emphasized that the swift activation of intelligence directly enabled the interception of the suspects and the successful retrieval of both the stolen assets and the dangerous firearms.
