DURBAN, KwaZulu-Natal — Three KZN police officers are now formally facing murder charges following the fatal shooting of four suspected extortionists in Durban. The case, which has ignited significant community outcry, centers on a March 2025 incident on Duff’s Road that is currently being processed at the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court.
The accused officers, identified as Sifiso Maphumulo, Vusumuzi Phewa, and Manelisi Rabi, recently made a brief court appearance to answer to two counts of murder. These charges are the direct result of a thorough probe conducted by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). Initially, law enforcement officials asserted that the suspects initiated the gunfire, forcing the officers to retaliate in self-defense.
However, that official narrative was severely undermined by viral social media footage depicting the four men adhering to police commands moments before the fatal shots were fired. This discrepancy has galvanized local residents. Large crowds recently gathered at the KwaMashu hostel, donning IFP colors to stand in solidarity with the victims’ relatives. Locals have actively pushed back against the criminal characterization of the deceased, with one resident pointing out that the men were active, trusted members of a neighborhood community policing forum.
Adding weight to the community’s defense, the sister of two of the deceased publicly stated that the widespread public backing for the families would simply not exist if the men had genuinely been involved in criminal enterprises.
Addressing the procedural aspects of the case, an IPID spokesperson confirmed that the accused officers have engaged cooperatively with the investigative process. The spokesperson highlighted a strong collaborative dynamic with law enforcement leadership, noting, “We have the full cooperation of the provincial management of the police, the provincial commissioner’s office, as well as his district commissioners.”
The spokesperson further detailed that IPID regularly presents case statistics involving police personnel to management forums on at least a quarterly basis. After securing and scrutinizing the officers’ accounts of the event, the accumulated evidence necessitated the current prosecutions. The IPID also noted that the door remains open to appending additional charges as the investigation continues to unfold.
