LIMPOPO — A coordinated law enforcement effort by the Capricorn District Highway Patrol and Sebayeng Police has resulted in a significant illicit cigarettes seizure, successfully halting a suspected smuggling operation along the R71 route. The strategic interception yielded an abandoned vehicle and a substantial quantity of contraband tobacco, marking a continued crackdown on the illegal trade.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the operation was initiated on Monday, 24 August 2026, at approximately 19:00. Authorities acted on credible intelligence indicating that a white Toyota Hilux bakkie was transporting illegal tobacco products through the local policing jurisdiction. Officers swiftly operationalized the tip-off and positively identified the suspect vehicle navigating the R71 public road.
When law enforcement signaled for the driver to pull over, the instructions were deliberately ignored. The driver accelerated, initiating a vehicular pursuit that originated in Ga-Mothiba Village, outside Mankweng, and continued until the bakkie was successfully intercepted at Makotopong Village.
Upon being cornered, two unidentified male occupants abandoned the white Toyota Hilux and escaped on foot, vanishing into the surrounding darkness to evade apprehension.
A subsequent search of the deserted vehicle uncovered the hidden contraband. Colonel Ledwaba confirmed that the seized illicit cigarettes carry an estimated street value of R50,400. Both the illegal tobacco products and the abandoned bakkie, which is valued at approximately R110,000, have been officially impounded by authorities as critical evidence while the investigation to identify and locate the fleeing suspects remains active.
