LIMPOPO — A 28-year-old Zimbabwean national, Cosmas Rutsito, has been handed an effective five-year prison sentence by the Musina Magistrate’s Court for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The sentencing marks the conclusion of a vehicle theft case that began with a community tip-off leading to the recovery of a stolen Ford Ranger in the Limpopo town.
The legal proceedings trace back to Friday, 5 December 2025, when the South African Police Service (SAPS) acted on a credible tip-off. Officers were directed to a property in Mushongoville, Musina, where a Ford Ranger Wildtrak was parked. Upon arrival, law enforcement apprehended the suspect at the scene.
Immediate verification checks conducted by officers revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen weeks earlier. The theft was originally logged in the Elsburg policing area of Gauteng Province on Sunday, 30 November 2025.
The criminal docket was first assigned to Constable Machebele. It was subsequently handed over to Constable Ngozo Florence Mavis, an investigator with the Musina Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, who drove the case forward. Despite attempts to secure release, the accused’s bail application was successfully opposed, ensuring he remained behind bars pending the final court outcome.
During the sentencing hearing on Monday, 24 August 2026, the court outlined the penalties for two distinct counts. For Count 1, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, Rutsito received a seven-year prison term. However, three years of this sentence were suspended for a five-year period, contingent on him not being convicted of a similar crime during that timeframe.
Additionally, for Count 2, the court found him guilty of contravening Section 49(1) of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002, adding a twelve-month imprisonment term. The magistrate ordered that both sentences run concurrently, culminating in an effective, direct five-year incarceration period for the accused.
