CAPE TOWN, Western Cape — The EFF no confidence motion targeting the National Assembly Speaker was decisively defeated in parliament, ensuring the presiding officer retains her position with crucial backing from the IFP. The legislative bid to remove the Speaker collapsed under the weight of a substantial majority, reflecting a clear endorsement of the current house leadership.
Official voting records confirm the scale of the rejection, with 282 Members of Parliament voting against the motion. Only 101 MPs voted in favour of the removal effort, effectively shutting down the Economic Freedom Fighters’ procedural challenge.
Following the vote, the Inkatha Freedom Party solidified its stance in support of the Speaker. Nhlanhla Hadebe, the IFP Parliamentary Chief Whip, publicly articulated the party’s rationale, emphasizing that the IFP does not believe the Speaker’s management of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Section 89 impeachment process warrants her removal from office.
Hadebe’s defense highlights the ongoing political friction surrounding the execution of the Section 89 inquiry. However, by rejecting the premise that the Speaker’s handling of the presidential impeachment process constituted grounds for dismissal, the IFP and its voting allies have reinforced the stability of the National Assembly’s administrative structure.
This parliamentary outcome not only preserves the Speaker’s mandate but also draws a firm line under the latest attempt to upend the leadership of the house, allowing lawmakers to pivot back to the broader national legislative agenda.
