Stage Zero, a South African distributed energy company, has completed a 100kW solar and battery installation at Addo Wildlife Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, helping the tourism and conservation operation reduce its reliance on grid electricity, manage energy costs, and strengthen continuity across its lodge, facilities, and daily operations.
The project responds to a practical challenge facing hospitality businesses across South Africa. Electricity demand continues throughout the day and into the evening, while guest expectations, operational routines, and service delivery cannot simply pause when grid supply becomes unreliable.
The new system allows Addo Wildlife to generate electricity from solar during daylight hours, store energy in the battery for later use, and draw from the grid when required. This gives the reserve greater control over how it sources and uses electricity while reducing the amount of grid-supplied energy needed over time.
“Tourism operations need energy systems that reflect the way the site actually works,” says Shaune Bouwer, Commercial Engineer at Stage Zero. “At Addo Wildlife, the system had to support the rhythm of a working lodge and conservation destination, with demand extending beyond daylight hours. Solar generation, battery storage, and grid supply now work together as part of one managed energy solution.”
Stage Zero developed the installation around Addo Wildlife’s energy needs and delivered the project as a tailored, turnkey solution. The company also provides ongoing support, helping the reserve maintain the system and protect its performance over time.
The system’s commercial value comes from reducing the amount of electricity Addo Wildlife needs to buy from the grid. Solar meets more of the site’s daytime demand, while stored energy can support evening use and periods of grid interruption. This helps the reserve manage electricity costs with greater certainty and reduces its exposure to an energy system that remains vulnerable to outages and rising tariffs.
