MPUMALANGA — An Elukwatini firearms arrest has led to the detention of four men after Mpumalanga police intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal weapons. The bust highlights a successful, intelligence-driven operation by local law enforcement to disrupt illicit arms movement in the region.
The operation commenced in the early hours of Thursday, 27 August 2026, at approximately 04:00. Off-duty members of the Crime Prevention unit received a credible tip-off indicating that a taxi was being utilized to transport firearms. Acting immediately on the intelligence, the officers formally placed themselves on active duty. With crucial logistical support from the Visible Policing (Vispol) Commander, who authorized the provision of a dedicated police vehicle, the team moved swiftly to track the suspected transport.
Upon verifying and confirming the intelligence, police operatives successfully intercepted a white taxi in the Elukwatini area. A thorough search of the vehicle was subsequently conducted, leading to the discovery and recovery of two rifles and approximately eight rounds of live ammunition concealed inside.
Following the seizure of the weapons, the four male occupants of the taxi were taken into custody at the scene. They have been formally apprehended and charged with the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and will face the relevant legal processes.
Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, addressed the outcome of the operation.
