KOMATIPOORT – A Komatipoort police shootout resulted in one fatally wounded suspect and another seriously injured following a confrontation with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tracing Team on Thursday, 27 August 2026. The operation also led to the arrest of two additional suspects and the recovery of two unlicensed firearms.
The incident began when members of the SAPS Tracing Team acted on intelligence regarding individuals wanted for serious crimes, including murder, armed robbery, and assault. Officers subsequently identified a suspicious VW Polo traveling from Komatipoort and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver of the vehicle failed to comply with police instructions and accelerated away. According to official reports, the occupants of the vehicle then opened fire on the pursuing officers, prompting an immediate shootout.
During the exchange of gunfire, one suspect was fatally wounded. A second suspect sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Medical Care Centre, where they remain under police guard. Two other suspects, a male and a female, were apprehended at the scene without injury. Law enforcement officials recovered two unlicensed firearms believed to have been deployed by the suspects during the confrontation.
Investigators are currently working to determine if the apprehended individuals are connected to other recent criminal activities in the area. This includes a farm attack that took place on 23 August 2026 in Komatipoort, during which a security guard was shot and killed.
In accordance with standard protocol, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has opened an investigation into the fatal shooting of the suspect by police. Concurrently, the surviving suspects face investigation for attempted murder of police officers and unlawful possession of firearms, with authorities noting that additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, commended the officers for their bravery and commitment to public safety.
“We are not going to tolerate lawlessness in this province,” Lieutenant General Modise stated. “The swift action by our Tracing Team, which led to this confrontation with armed and dangerous suspects of murder and armed robbery, will probably send a clear message that we will hunt down perpetrators of crime from their hiding places. Our members came under fire and they responded to protect the lives of community members.”
The SAPS has assured the public that the investigation remains active and that all legal processes will be rigorously followed to ensure accountability and justice.
