JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — A massive 24-hour law enforcement sweep under Operation Shanela has resulted in 1,626 arrests across Gauteng, according to Acting Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana. The extensive anti-crime campaign strategically targeted Johannesburg’s most volatile policing precincts, aiming to dismantle violent criminal networks and enforce strict regulatory compliance in local businesses.
The operational breakdown reveals a heavy focus on gender-based and violent crimes. Of the total individuals taken into custody, 176 arrests were directly linked to domestic violence incidents, involving 175 women and one child. The blitz also successfully intercepted severe violent offenses, leading to five kidnapping arrests (two in the Johannesburg district and three in the Tshwane district), four carjackings, seven business robberies, five house robberies, 18 attempted murders, six murders, and 16 rapes.
Major General Kekana emphasized that the Jeppe and Cleveland policing precincts continue to present significant law enforcement challenges, particularly concerning murder, attempted murder, and various forms of robbery. To combat this, the South African Police Service (SAPS) employs a data-driven strategy. By continuously analyzing provincial crime trends, SAPS identifies these high-risk stations and deliberately floods them with additional personnel and resources. This targeted surge is designed to minimize criminal opportunities and systematically eliminate illicit activity from these specific communities.
In addition to violent crime suppression, the operation featured an aggressive crackdown on non-compliant liquor establishments. Officers executed a raid on a local club, ordering all patrons to immediately vacate the premises. Authorities clarified that while legitimate commerce is protected, regulatory adherence is non-negotiable. Inspections revealed multiple violations of the Liquor Act, including venues operating without an appointed manager or owner on site, which creates an environment of unchecked lawlessness. Furthermore, police intercepted outlets illegally selling alcohol to underage children, including students who were supposed to be attending classes.
Major General Kekana reaffirmed that the SAPS remains deeply committed to eradicating crime in the province. Law enforcement leadership confirmed that Operation Shanela deployments are not a one-off event; rather, they will continue as a sustained, proactive measure to disrupt criminal enterprises and maintain a highly visible, reassuring police presence in Gauteng’s identified crime hotspots.
