LIMPOPO — Authorities have launched an attempted murder and assault investigation following a volatile Bolobedu high school police incident that left a teenage student with a gunshot wound. The confrontation, which unfolded at a secondary school in Nakampe Village, has prompted an immediate probe by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) into the actions of both the learners and the responding officers.
The sequence of events began on Tuesday, 01 September 2026, when law enforcement was summoned to the campus to address reports of a student making threats. Upon arrival, educators briefed the responding members, who were then tasked with escorting a 21-year-old learner to his parents once his examination concluded.
Tensions reportedly flared when the 21-year-old student allegedly resisted the officers’ guidance and shoved one of the members. As a second officer stepped in to support his colleague, a substantial crowd of students reportedly poured out of their classrooms, pelting the law enforcement team with plastic bottles and stones.
Faced with an increasingly dangerous and volatile environment, one of the officers allegedly drew his service weapon and discharged a single warning shot into the ground to break up the mob, enabling the police team to safely retreat from the school grounds. In the aftermath, it was discovered that a 16-year-old learner had suffered a gunshot injury to his left leg. The minor received initial care at a nearby clinic before being transferred to a hospital for advanced medical treatment.
The IPID has been formally notified and is actively investigating the precise circumstances that led to the student’s injury. Consequently, two distinct criminal dockets have been registered: one for assault on a police officer and another for attempted murder, with the latter forming a critical part of the independent directorate’s ongoing inquiry.
Addressing the community, the Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, emphasized the necessity of respecting law enforcement personnel as they carry out their mandated duties. He appealed to both students and residents to maintain peace and avoid violent confrontations.
“Police officers have a duty and responsibility to respond to any complaints and to maintain safety within the communities, including schools,” Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers stated. “Any concerns regarding police conduct must be reported through the appropriate channels and should never result in violence. At the same time, circumstances surrounding this incident must be thoroughly investigated.”
