NORTHERN CAPE – A 50-year-old man has been handed a 25-year direct prison sentence by the Kimberley Regional Court following a conviction for the rape of a five-year-old girl in Jan Kempdorp. This decisive ruling concludes a meticulous investigation by the Hartswater Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, ensuring severe legal repercussions for the perpetrator.
The harrowing incident unfolded on 21 October 2023 at a residential property in Jan Kempdorp. At the time, the young victim was at home alongside her mother and a family friend. The accused, who rented a room at the same residence, lured the child into his quarters under the guise of getting chips. Because the mother knew and trusted the tenant, she permitted the child to accompany him.
Shortly after they entered the room, the assault occurred. The situation was abruptly halted when the victim’s mother walked in and discovered the accused in the act. Authorities were contacted without delay, prompting the immediate registration of a formal rape case at the Jan Kempdorp Police Station.
The investigation was subsequently assigned to Detective Warrant Officer Sidwell Dastile of the Hartswater FCS Unit. Through rigorous and dedicated investigative efforts, Det. W/O Dastile gathered the necessary evidence to build a solid case, which directly enabled the successful prosecution of the offender.
Upon appearing in court, the 50-year-old was found guilty and handed the 25-year direct imprisonment term. Beyond the substantial jail time, the court mandated that the offender’s name be officially added to the National Register for Sex Offenders. Furthermore, the presiding judge declared him unfit to own a firearm and issued a permanent prohibition against any employment or activities involving children.
Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Gabathata Makgari, praised the judicial outcome. Major General Makgari explicitly commended Detective Warrant Officer Dastile for his unwavering commitment and thorough investigative work, noting that these efforts were instrumental in bringing the offender to justice and upholding the law.
