MPUMALANGA – In a significant move against illicit narcotics and corruption, recent Hendrina drug arrests have led to the detention of three individuals following a targeted, self-initiated operation by the Witbank Tactical Response Team (TRT).
The crackdown, which took place on Tuesday, 01 September 2026, was launched after law enforcement received actionable intelligence regarding individuals allegedly trafficking narcotics within the Hendrina Policing Precinct.
During the operation, officers apprehended a 44-year-old suspect on charges of drug dealing and being in the country undocumented. A search of the individual yielded five packets of crystal meth, 64 packets of suspected nyaope, and seven glass smoking pipes. The seized narcotics have an estimated street value of R2,060. Additionally, officers recovered R1,207 in cash.
A second suspect, a 41-year-old individual, was also taken into custody for alleged drug dealing. Police confiscated a larger cache from this suspect, which included 80 packets of suspected nyaope, 15 packets of suspected crystal meth, three suspected ecstasy tablets, two suspected rocks, and 12 glass smoking pipes. These drugs are estimated to be worth R3,340, and R360 in cash was recovered at the scene.
The third arrest involved a 35-year-old suspect who was nabbed for being undocumented and attempting to bribe law enforcement. The individual reportedly offered police members R1,000 in an attempt to circumvent the law.
All three suspects made their first appearance at the Hendrina Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 04 September 2026. They have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to reappear in court on Monday, 07 September 2026.
Following the successful operation, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, praised the Witbank TRT members for their vigilance and rapid response to the intelligence provided.
Highlighting the broader impact of the narcotics trade, Lieutenant General Modise emphasized the department’s commitment to community safety and police integrity.
“Drug dealing destroys communities and contributes to other criminal activities. We will continue to conduct intelligence-driven and self-initiated operations to disrupt the illegal drug trade and ensure that those involved in such criminal activities are brought to justice,” Lieutenant General Modise stated.
Addressing the bribery charge, the Provincial Commissioner added: “We also have a zero-tolerance approach towards bribery and corruption. No person should attempt to interfere with Police officers in the execution of their duties.”
