JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG — A severe mining skills shortage in South Africa poses a significant threat to the industry’s ability to capitalize on the global energy transition, as soaring demand for critical minerals requires a highly capable and specialized workforce. Industry leaders warn that without urgent, sustained intervention, the country risks falling behind in the race to supply essential resources for worldwide electrification and clean energy initiatives.
Stakeholders recently convened at the five-day Electra Mining expo, the industry’s flagship showcase for technology and innovation, to address how to keep the sector competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace. Event organizer Gary Corin noted that the 54-year-old exhibition mirrors the sector’s historical growth, with emerging technology making a massive impact on current industry trends. Corin highlighted that skills development was a dedicated theme day at the event, featuring universities actively working to attract young talent into South Africa’s industrial market and facilitating direct conversations between emerging talent and businesses seeking to hire.
As mining houses globally seek more efficient mineral processing, emerging technology is viewed as a vital tool, though not a replacement for human expertise. Johan Robertson, Group CEO at Multitech, emphasized that while artificial intelligence is an important asset, human problem-solving skills will remain in constant demand. Robertson described automation as a “journey with the people,” rather than a mechanism for replacing workers. He affirmed his company’s commitment to sustainable growth, noting that they are focused on expanding factories and improving the industry rather than restructuring or retrenching staff, ensuring technology is not adopted at the expense of employees.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by Gary Lane, President of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, who identified the skills and capability shortage as a major bottleneck holding back South Africa’s potential. Lane pointed out that the country will likely consume more copper in the next decade than it has in its entire history. Furthermore, South Africa’s abundant reserves of platinum group metals (PGMs), chrome, and manganese face massive global demand driven by electrification, green energy, and decarbonization goals.
According to Lane, the primary constraint in responding to this demand is not merely a lack of university graduates, but a shortage of skilled, capable professionals ready to deliver on the country’s mining ambitions. He stressed that investing in skills development is not a short-term fix and will require sustained time and effort to yield results.
Ultimately, stakeholders at the expo agreed that a collaborative approach across the sector, bridging the gap between education, technology, and industry, is essential to overcoming this bottleneck and unlocking the future potential of South Africa’s mining industry.
