GAUTENG – Operation Prosper at the Kloof Gold Mine in Westonaria has resulted in 10 arrests and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, marking a significant law enforcement action against illegal mining activities in the region.
The coordinated operation was executed on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, through a collaborative effort involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Public Order Policing (POP), Westonaria Visible Policing, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Sibanye Protection Services.
According to a SAPS spokesperson, the operation yielded critical seizures and multiple apprehensions. One suspect was taken into custody for the unlawful possession of an AK-47 rifle, associated ammunition, and gold-bearing material. In a separate but related discovery during the same operation, a man and a woman were also arrested after being found in possession of gold-bearing material.
Furthermore, seven additional suspects were detained for contravening the Immigration Act, as authorities determined they were in the country without the required legal documentation.
All 10 arrested individuals are expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court soon to face formal charges.
Authorities emphasized that this operation is part of a broader, ongoing strategy. The SAPS and SANDF confirmed they will continue to conduct integrated, multi-agency operations to combat illegal mining and dismantle related criminal networks across the province.
