GAUTENG — A Zimbabwean national has been arrested in Johannesburg for allegedly manufacturing fraudulent South African identity cards, following a targeted law enforcement operation in the Hillbrow policing precinct.
On Wednesday, 9 September 2026, police received credible information regarding an individual actively recruiting clients who required counterfeit South African smart identity cards, along with forged bank statements and payslips.
After verifying the intelligence, authorities executed a search and seizure operation in the Hillbrow area. The raid yielded significant evidence of the alleged operation, including six completed South African smart identity cards, 22 blank SA smart identity cards, a laptop, and a specialized smart card printing machine.
The Zimbabwean suspect was subsequently taken into custody and is expected to appear in court soon. A police spokesperson confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
In an official statement, a police spokesperson issued a stern warning to members of the public against participating in the illegal manufacture or acquisition of fraudulent identity documents and other forged documentation, emphasizing the serious legal consequences associated with these crimes.
