SOUTH AFRICA — President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with China, emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations as a cornerstone for future innovation and development. The message was delivered at the 19th Pujiang Innovation Forum in Shanghai, where South Africa is participating as the historic first African Country of Honour.
In a formal address conveyed by South Africa’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, President Ramaphosa extended his gratitude for the continued goodwill and support from the Chinese people. This milestone participation aligns with the celebration of 28 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The Country of Honour designation spotlights South Africa’s growing scientific and technological capabilities on the global stage. It opens new avenues for bilateral cooperation in a relationship that has steadily expanded over the years to encompass trade, investment, infrastructure, education, science, technology, and innovation.
Highlighting the strategic value of international platforms, President Ramaphosa stressed that bilateral cooperation must yield tangible improvements in citizens’ lives. He stated, “It is my conviction that the 19th Pujiang Innovation Forum will not only promote new ideas and partnerships but will also deepen our shared commitment to advancing innovation-led development and industrialisation, alleviating poverty and achieving sustainable development for all.” He emphasized that the South Africa–China relationship must translate into practical benefits that advance the development priorities of the Global South.
Commending China’s role in fostering international collaboration, the President noted, “I congratulate the forum on its commitment to global cooperation and applaud its progressive support for multilateralism.” The two nations continue to collaborate through key multilateral and bilateral frameworks, including BRICS and the South Africa–China Bi-National Commission. Notably, in March 2026, the ninth session of this commission was convened during a working visit to South Africa by Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng, where both sides reviewed sectoral cooperation and strategies to fortify their comprehensive strategic partnership.
On the ground in Shanghai, Minister Professor Blade Nzimande is spearheading a delegation of South African scientists, researchers, innovators, and senior representatives from the National System of Innovation. The delegation aims to showcase the country’s technological prowess, forge new partnerships, and advance national science, technology, and innovation priorities. Upon arriving in China on Friday evening, Minister Nzimande expressed strong optimism about securing new partnerships and elevating the country’s scientific capabilities while addressing a South African media contingent.
Concluding his message, President Ramaphosa extended his best wishes to the organizers and participants, stating, “I wish the 19th Pujiang Innovation Forum every success and congratulate all those who have contributed to its success.” South Africa remains poised to leverage this landmark forum to elevate its scientific footprint and foster enduring, innovation-driven collaborations with China.
