Heritage Day Braais with Compassion

FOUR PAWS encourages Mzansi to celebrate tradition with kinder choices for animals, people and the planet.

Cape Town, 14 September 2026 – As South Africans prepare to gather around the fire this Heritage Day observed on 24 September, FOUR PAWS is encouraging Mzansi to make compassion part of the celebration by enjoying plant-based dishes.

From family braais in Soweto and Gqeberha to beachside gatherings in Durban and backyard celebrations in Cape Town, Heritage Day is about sharing food, stories and connection. This year, FOUR PAWS invites South Africans to honour these traditions in a way that is also kinder to animals and the environment.

Adding plant-based favourites to the spread is an easy place to start. Think flame-grilled mielies with chakalaka, mushroom sosaties, veggie kebabs, braaied sweet potatoes, bean salads, stuffed peppers or marinated cauliflower steaks. These flavour-packed dishes can hold their own on Heritage Day while helping reduce the demand for intensive animal farming.

“Compassion does not require us to give up our traditions. It invites us to evolve them. This Heritage Day, every plate offers an opportunity to celebrate our culture while making kinder choices for animals and for the world we share,” says Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa.

At its heart, Heritage Day celebrates the values that unite South Africans, including ubuntu, respect and community. FOUR PAWS believes these values extend to how we treat animals and the choices we make every day.

“Our heritage is built on coming together and looking after one another. By making room for plant-based options at the braai, we’re showing that compassion can be part of our traditions too. Small choices can make a meaningful difference for animals, while still bringing people together around the fire,” says Miles.

FOUR PAWS emphasises that compassionate eating is not about perfection. Whether it is choosing a meat-free side dish, trying a plant-based burger or introducing a new veggie braai favourite to the family, every small step counts.

This Heritage Day, FOUR PAWS encourages South Africans to celebrate everything that makes our country unique while embracing choices that reflect a kinder future for animals, people and the planet.
