WESTERN CAPE – Law enforcement officials in Khayelitsha have arrested a suspect and recovered two illegal firearms following a swift response by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Operation Shanela. The operation, which concluded with a shootout on Monday, 14 September 2026, targeted individuals allegedly linked to a string of local robberies.
According to a South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, the tactical response was initiated after investigators received credible information about suspects using a white Toyota Starlet to commit robberies throughout the Khayelitsha area.
Police units successfully tracked the suspect vehicle to Injongo Street in Site C, Khayelitsha. Upon being spotted, the suspects abruptly exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, triggering an immediate police pursuit.
The chase culminated in a shootout between law enforcement and the fleeing suspects. During the incident, one male suspect sustained injuries and was subsequently apprehended at the scene. Officers also recovered a 9mm pistol and a shotgun during the site search.
The 18-year-old suspect is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital under strict police guard. A SAPS spokesperson confirmed that the individual will be formally charged and is scheduled to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once medically cleared to do so.
