KWAZULU-NATAL – A wanted murder suspect was fatally wounded in a police shootout in Inanda on Wednesday evening, September 16, 2026, concluding a targeted operation against an alleged member of the notorious West Gang. The individual, who was actively sought for a string of serious and violent crimes, died following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers in the Mzomusha area.
Police received actionable intelligence indicating that the suspect was hiding at a residence on Ndimande Road in the Mzomusha area of Newtown C, Inanda. Upon operationalizing this information, officers arrived at the location and encountered five men. After identifying themselves as law enforcement officers, police requested to search the individuals.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, one of the men immediately fled inside the house, and shots were fired. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the wanted suspect was shot and sustained fatal wounds. The suspect was actively wanted for serious and violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and house robberies.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased was a feared member of the West Gang. He was reportedly among the young men observed discharging firearms in a recent viral video, which was presumed to have been recorded in the nearby area of KwaMashu.
Colonel Netshiunda confirmed that no police officers were injured during the confrontation. A case of attempted murder of police officers has been officially opened and is currently under active investigation.
