CAPE TOWN, Western Cape — The Cape Town mayoral race for the 2026 Local Government Elections is rapidly intensifying, with the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and GOOD Party officially unveiling their mayoral candidates, Bulelwa Zondeka and Brett Herron, respectively. As political campaigns gain momentum across the Western Cape, both parties are anchoring their platforms on urgent service delivery issues, including housing, affordability, and decisive action against gender-based violence and violent crime.
In Khayelitsha, the UDM introduced its Western Cape chairperson, Bulelwa Zondeka, as its official mayoral candidate for the City of Cape Town. During the campaign rally, UDM party leader Bandisa addressed the nation’s escalating crime crisis, specifically highlighting the recent tragic killings in the Egolini area.
Bandisa noted that the country is deeply concerned about the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) as witnessed in the Eguain area. Emphasizing the need for systemic change, Bandisa stated that South Africa may need to re-evaluate its legislation and criminal justice system to ensure perpetrators of such severe crimes face appropriate consequences. Acknowledging the growing public calls for the return of the death penalty, Bandisa stressed that regardless of one’s stance on that position, it is clear that the fight against crime must remain a national priority.
These remarks come amid mounting public concern over the deaths of nine women whose bodies have been discovered across the Agorulin area since July. Although authorities have not officially confirmed that the cases are connected, the tragic events have reignited widespread demands for stronger, more effective action against GBV and violent crime.
Meanwhile, in Athlone, the GOOD Party advanced its own campaign trail, officially nominating its Secretary General, Brett Herron, as its mayoral candidate for the city.
GOOD Party leader Patricia de Lille emphasized that Herron’s extensive background in law, national parliament, and provincial government uniquely equips him to advance the party’s vision for Cape Town. De Lille highlighted that Herron deeply understands the inner workings of government, stating that his mission is to build on the progress made in 2018. This includes refocusing civic priorities on caring for poor and vulnerable populations and actively addressing redress.
As the local government elections draw nearer, both the UDM and the GOOD Party are strategically positioning service delivery—specifically housing, crime prevention, affordability, and redress—at the very center of their campaigns to secure voter support in the City of Cape Town.
