SANDTON, Gauteng — A 59-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) Lieutenant General has been arrested in Sandton on serious sexual offences charges, marking a critical development in the force’s internal accountability measures.
The high-ranking officer was taken into custody on Monday evening by members of the Commissions Recommendations Task Team (CRTT). The arrest occurred at an upmarket establishment on Rivonia Road, located just kilometers from the Sandton Police Station, where the officer was reportedly dining with associates before being approached by the task team.
According to official statements, the senior officer faces charges relating to the alleged sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl between July and August 2026, as well as the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman at a Sandton hotel in May 2026.
Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, officially welcomed the arrest and strongly condemned the alleged conduct. Emphasizing the country’s ongoing fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), Lt. Gen. Dimpane stated that police officers are explicitly entrusted with protecting women and children.
“There can be no room for anyone within the police service who is alleged to abuse their position or violate the rights of women and children,” the Acting National Commissioner noted, stressing that the fight against GBVF must begin with accountability within SAPS ranks. The statement affirmed that the police service will take decisive action against members suspected of criminal activity and will not shield individuals facing serious allegations, irrespective of their rank or position.
The identity of the 59-year-old Lieutenant General has not been publicly disclosed at this stage. This precaution aligns with the Criminal Procedure Act, which protects the identities of all parties involved in sensitive cases, particularly those involving minors and sexual assault, until the suspect formally appears in court to enter a plea.
Following the arrest, the officer was reportedly transported to a private residence to collect documentation and personal items before being transferred to the Sandton Police Station for processing. The senior official is scheduled to make their first appearance at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
