SOUTH AFRICA — The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has recorded a massive early response for the upcoming academic year, with NSFAS 2027 applications surpassing 51,000 within just the first four days of the cycle opening. This strong initial turnout underscores the critical role the funding body plays in facilitating access to higher education and vocational training for deserving South African students, while reflecting a growing public awareness of government-funded financial aid opportunities.
According to the latest dashboard statistics released by the scheme, a total of 51,474 applications were captured between the opening date of Friday, 18 September 2026, and the following Monday. The official student headcount stands at 49,413, indicating that thousands of prospective learners have already initiated their journey toward securing tertiary education funding for the 2027 academic year.
Breakdown of Early Application Figures
Breaking down the early figures, NSFAS spokespersons highlighted that the bulk of the submissions came from first-time entering students and prospective applicants, totaling 43,297. Further Education and Training (FET) applicants accounted for 6,865 submissions, while 1,312 applications were lodged by senior applicants seeking financial assistance.
Demographic Trends and Applicant Categories
Demographic data reveals distinct trends in the early registration pool. Female applicants currently dominate the submissions, making up 38,121 applications (74.06%), compared to 13,353 (25.94%) from male applicants.
“The data further indicates that female applicants continue to make up the majority of applications received… highlighting the continued demand for financial assistance amongst learners and prospective students transitioning from secondary education into the post-school education and training sector,” NSFAS spokespersons noted in a statement released on Tuesday. The majority of the applications are from youth aged 18 to 29.
Additionally, the scheme reported significant uptake from specific support categories. A total of 12,625 applicants identified as beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), and 52 applications were received from students with disabilities.
Strict Deadlines and Application Advice
Looking ahead, the scheme issued a strict reminder regarding the closing date to manage expectations and processing times. The 2027 application window will officially close on 31 October 2026.
NSFAS spokespersons stressed that the NSFAS Board has already communicated that there will be absolutely no extension to this deadline. Prospective students are strongly urged to avoid the last-minute rush and to submit their applications as early as possible. Officials also advised applicants to ensure that all required supporting documents are submitted correctly and that consent forms are fully completed to facilitate smooth verification processes.
Despite the high volume of early applications, the scheme noted positive progress in processing the submissions received to date. NSFAS spokespersons commended the high level of participation and expressed gratitude to learners, parents, guardians, schools, and various stakeholders for their active support since the portal opened.
To maintain transparency and keep stakeholders informed, the scheme promised to provide regular updates on application trends and processing progress throughout the window. Applicants can conveniently submit their forms via the official NSFAS website or through the dedicated mobile application, which is fully supported on both Android and Apple iOS devices.
