PRETORIA, Gauteng — South Africa has taken formal diplomatic steps against US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III, escalating tensions between the two nations after the envoy issued a public set of demands on behalf of the Trump administration. The United States Embassy in South Africa confirmed that the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) initiated the diplomatic action against Ambassador Bozell.
The move comes directly in response to a public statement in which Bozell called on the South African government to meet five specific conditions set by Washington. Among those demands, the Trump administration is pressing Pretoria to guarantee the protection of property rights and to reverse the country’s expropriation law. The US also wants South Africa to enact changes to its broad-based black economic empowerment policy framework.
Beyond economic and legislative matters, the demands carry significant social and security dimensions. Washington is calling on the South African government to publicly condemn the “kill the Boer” song and to take concrete steps to improve safety on farms and in rural areas across the country.
The diplomatic intervention by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation signals that Pretoria views the ambassador’s public posturing as a breach of standard diplomatic protocol, though the specific nature of the steps taken against Bozell has not been detailed publicly.
