NORTH WEST — An undocumented immigrant arrested in Wolmaransstad is facing a complex array of serious charges after a targeted police operation uncovered an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and stolen critical infrastructure. The 43-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Monday night, 28 September 2026, marking a significant breakthrough in a broader investigation by local law enforcement.
The incident unfolded after the suspect allegedly visited a relative’s residence where shots were reportedly fired. Police members, who were already monitoring the situation due to an ongoing investigation, responded swiftly to the scene. Upon noticing the approaching police, the suspect attempted to evade arrest by fleeing the area in a vehicle. This triggered a police pursuit that ultimately resulted in the vehicle being stopped and the suspect being apprehended.
During a subsequent search of the suspect and the vehicle, officers recovered an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and suspected stolen Transnet cable.
According to SAPS spokespersons, the swift intervention prevented further escalation, and the suspect is now facing a comprehensive list of charges. These include the contravention of a protection order (which involved the pointing of a firearm), unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, damage to critical infrastructure, driving under the influence of alcohol, and contravention of the Immigration Act.
SAPS spokespersons noted that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm, ammunition, and the suspected stolen critical infrastructure remains active. As the probe progresses, additional charges may be added to the docket.
The suspect made his first appearance before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on Monday, 12 October 2026.
