Virgin Atlantic is celebrating 30 years of flying to South Africa by enhancing its Johannesburg service, marking the milestone with the introduction of its Airbus A350-1000 on the daily route from 25 October 2026, followed by three additional weekly flights from December 2026. The enhanced schedule will give customers travelling between Johannesburg and London greater choice and flexibility, while providing enhanced opportunities for onward connections through London Heathrow to destinations across North America, the Caribbean and Europe.
The upgraded daily service will operate as follows:
- VS449: London Heathrow (LHR) – Johannesburg (JNB), daily, operated by the A350-1000
- VS450: Johannesburg (JNB) – London Heathrow (LHR), daily, operated by the A350-1000
From mid-December 2026, Virgin Atlantic will further increase capacity on the Johannesburg route with three additional weekly services, operated by Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
The additional flights will operate as follows:
- VS461: London Heathrow – Johannesburg, from 13 December 2026, operating Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
- VS462: Johannesburg – London Heathrow, from 14 December 2026, operating Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The additional services provide customers with even more flexibility when planning travel between South Africa and the UK, particularly during the busy summer and festive travel period.
Celebrating 30 years of connecting South Africa to the world
The expanded Johannesburg schedule comes as Virgin Atlantic celebrates 30 years of serving Johannesburg, marking three decades of connecting South Africa with the UK and destinations beyond.
For Virgin Atlantic, the milestone represents more than the longevity of a route – it reflects the relationships built with customers, employees and partners over three decades.
Marc Harding, Country Manager South Africa, Virgin Atlantic, said: “When I reflect on the last 30 years, I don’t think first about aircraft, schedules or destinations. I think about the people who believed in our brand, the teams who made every journey possible, and the partners who have stood alongside us every step of the way. Together we’ve built something truly special, and I believe the next 30 years hold even greater opportunities for Virgin Atlantic, for South Africa, and for the connections that bring us together.”
The Johannesburg-London route remains an important gateway for South African travellers, connecting customers not only with the UK but with Virgin Atlantic’s wider network via London Heathrow.
As a member of SkyTeam, Virgin Atlantic customers can also benefit from enhanced global connectivity and reciprocal frequent flyer benefits across the alliance, while the airline’s partnerships with other carriers provide additional opportunities for onward travel.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Virgin Atlantic will surprise customers with up to three complimentary cabin upgrades across the anniversary-period VS450 flights (Ts and Cs apply).

A new generation of flying
The introduction of the Airbus A350-1000 on the daily Johannesburg service will bring Virgin Atlantic’s latest-generation aircraft to the route.
Customers can experience Virgin Atlantic’s award-winning service across Upper Class, Premium and Economy, with the airline’s distinctive approach to hospitality, dining, entertainment and comfort.
For eligible customers departing Johannesburg, the journey also begins at the airline’s Johannesburg Clubhouse, which offers locally inspired dining, regional wines and spirits, showers, luggage storage and a comfortable environment before departure.
Virgin Atlantic has served South Africa for close to 30 years, with the Johannesburg route playing an important role in supporting business, cultural and leisure connections between South Africa, the UK and the wider world.
The airline’s latest schedule expansion reinforces its long-term commitment to the South African market and comes at an important moment as Virgin Atlantic looks ahead to the next chapter of its relationship with the country.
