Thohoyandou, Limpopo: 06 October 2026 – Just a year after launching, MR21 Funerals & Insurance has been named Best Newcomer at the 2nd Annual National Funeral Business Awards (NFBA) 2026, held on 04 October in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Since officially opening its doors in September 2025, the Venda-based business has built a strong market presence across Limpopo. To ensure seamless, dignified service delivery from day one, MR21 has made substantial investments in its operational infrastructure, anchored by a state-of-the-art corporate office and a modern fleet of vehicles equipped to serve families efficiently across the region.
Founded on the values of compassion, professionalism, trust, and true respect, MR21 currently provides direct employment to 47 local staff members, contributing to regional job creation while serving families during their time of need.
Managing Director, Aluwani Tshifhango described the national award as a meaningful endorsement of the work his team has put in over the past year.
“When we opened MR21 in September last year, our focus was on earning the trust of the families we serve through genuine care and dignified service,” says Tshifhango. “To be recognised as the Best Newcomer on a national platform so early in our journey is a proud moment for all of us. This award belongs to our hardworking team, our partners, and the community that welcomed us with open arms.”
A central driver of MR21’s growth has been its deep roots in the local community. The business works closely with traditional leaders, local churches and religious institutions to design funeral services and cover options that reflect the cultural practices and economic needs of families in the area.
As it grows, MR21 Funerals & Insurance will continue to explore strategic partnership opportunities with other players in the industry, suppliers, and community networks to strengthen service delivery and elevate standards across the funeral sector.
With an established foundation in Venda, MR21 is now preparing for its next stage of growth. The business plans to expand its footprint across the entire Limpopo province, while also establishing offices in Pretoria and Johannesburg to serve clients who live and work in Gauteng.
“A significant number of people from Limpopo work in Gauteng, but their families remain here,” Tshifhango adds. “By opening branches in Pretoria and Johannesburg, we want to make it easy for those clients to arrange cover and funeral arrangements for their loved ones back home with a brand they already know and trust.”
