Mount Edgecombe is now home to a larger KwaZulu-Natal headquarters for Towa, the South African supplier of cloud-based point of sale software and hardware serving retail and hospitality operators. Located at 9 Fairways Avenue, the bigger premises give the firm extra capacity for customer meetings, live product walkthroughs and ongoing care of the shops, restaurants and coffee bars that lean on its systems through every trading day. Arriving in October, with the closing quarter of 2026 dictating the rhythm of year-end trade, the relocation lands at a sensible time for owners keen to watch a new till in action ahead of the year’s most hectic stretch.
Roots in the province run deep for the business. It started life in 1972 as S A Cash Register and, early on, formed a Natal company based in Glenashley, Durban. Through the years the firm progressed from mechanical and electronic Towa cash registers into software, launched its own software department, opened a Durban retail store and, more recently, rolled out cloud platforms covering both retail and hospitality. Now operating as Towa Data Systems, it positions itself as one of the country’s leading retail and hospitality software providers.
A bigger base for demos, training and support
Plenty of owners would rather settle on a point of sale system in person. At Mount Edgecombe, Towa’s retail and hospitality specialists now have more room to run the software on genuine hardware, work through what a business actually requires and field questions before a single install takes place. A demo can be booked via the website or by phoning the team straight away.
Training sits at the heart of how Towa operates. Sessions are offered both in-house and on site, and the Nimbus back office software ships with staff training either on location or off site, whichever fits the customer best. Repairs and servicing take place on Towa’s own premises under its technical director, and an annual maintenance plan is available for POS equipment. A larger head office underpins every part of that effort, from bench repairs to bringing fresh clients on board.
Head office hours run Monday to Thursday, 8am to 5pm, and Friday, 8am to 4pm.
Retail software built for more than one store
Towa Stratus serves as the company’s multi-outlet platform for retail and inventory management. Because it operates in the cloud, owners can keep an eye on the business from anywhere, and it carries on functioning offline if the connection drops. Stratus is built to grow from one store up to hundreds.
Its capabilities mirror what South African retailers handle daily. Debtor balances and purchases show up in real time at any till in any branch. Loyalty schemes run straight off the till with no third-party product fees. Mix and match offers, including buy one get one free or money off a third item, can be configured to match rivals, and promotional sales appear grouped on the end-of-day report. Stratus connects to most financial switches, FNB, SBSA, iVeri, Nomad and Transaction Junction among them, plus Blue Label and Glocell for airtime. Butcheries, supermarkets, bottle stores, pet shops, jewellery shops and fruit and veg stores all feature among the trades Stratus caters to. For a retailer running festive-season specials, a pos system that juggles promotions and stock across sites without manual fixes can prove its worth right at the counter.
Hospitality software for restaurants, bars and coffee shops
For hospitality venues, Towa’s Fusion software spans order entry, table control, deliveries, inventory and reporting. Each venue can tailor its order entry menus, and the system retains a customer’s past order history alongside the complete product list. Shifting an order between tables takes only a few taps. When deliveries are involved, Fusion logs every driver’s sales, delivery charges and commission, with address auto-complete trimming capture mistakes.
On the stock side, Fusion delivers live updates on what is in hand, which helps owners keep shrinkage and wastage in check. Reporting flags best sellers by item, pulls incoming and outgoing costs from synced sales figures, and points managers toward places to trim wage spend. Among the features Towa lists are phone and sit-down orders, online ordering, kitchen display screens, order status screens, combos, happy hour pricing, Zapper and EFT integration, table reservations, mobile app ordering and loyalty integration.
Towa also provides Fusion Express for newer small businesses, a more recent package carrying the core Fusion functionality with limited stock control. Coffee shops, restaurants, fast food outlets, bars, ice cream stores and night clubs sit among the venues Towa caters for.
One back office across every site
Holding it all together is Towa Nimbus Back Office. Being cloud based, it lets inventory and sales be managed from anywhere there is an internet connection, Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. It fits single sites, multi-site restaurant groups and sizeable retail organisations alike, with multi-user accounts set to varying levels of security access. Multi-site reports let owners weigh up branch performance, and bigger groups can approach Towa about bespoke development.
Hardware backed by a long partnership
Software accounts for only half of a pos point of sale system. Since 2009 Towa has worked with Senor Tech on all-in-one touch POS terminals that link up to printers, scanners, scales, video and menu boards. The broader hardware line-up takes in electronic cash registers, handheld and in-counter barcode scanners, high and medium duty cash drawers, receipt and barcode printers, customer displays, card readers, weighing scales and Hikvision CCTV for multi-site shopping areas. Sourcing the whole kit from one supplier leaves a single point of contact whenever something needs looking at.
Rental options for new and growing businesses
For a new store or restaurant, cash flow frequently tips the balance. Towa therefore offers its packages on a fixed-cost rental basis from R999 a month, pitched at owners light on start-up funds. The company is additionally running a 10% discount on its installation fee for customers who make contact.
Offices across Southern Africa
Besides the new Mount Edgecombe head office, Towa operates a Cape Town branch at North Park, 2 Fir Street, Black River Park, Observatory, plus an international office via Swazi Cash Register in Eswatini. A single national number reaches all three. Current customers can log support requests through the Towa support portal.
