When “what’s for dinner?” becomes the hardest question of the day

Between work, traffic, school and sport, the evening meal can become one decision too many. Col’Cacchio GO offers pizzas, pastas and salads for the nights when cooking or eating out does not fit the plan.

It usually starts with a WhatsApp.

“What are we doing for dinner?”

Nobody took anything out of the freezer. One person is still sitting in traffic. Someone else is leaving the office late. There has been a school run, an afternoon of sport, homework to get through, or another meeting that should have ended 20 minutes ago.

By six o’clock, dinner can feel less like a meal and more like the final negotiation of the day.

It is a familiar household predicament. Cooking may have been the intention that morning, but getting a meal onto the table now means deciding what to make, checking ingredients and perhaps stopping at the shops before preparation has even begun.

Going out brings its own arrangements. On an evening when everyone is tired, and there is still plenty to do at home, a restaurant visit may be better saved for another day.

That leaves a practical question: what can everyone agree on, and how easily can it become dinner?

One household, several appetites The problem with dinner is not always finding food. Sometimes it’s finding one answer that works for everyone.

One person wants pizza, another pasta, someone else something lighter. Add dietary preferences, children with firm opinions and adults arriving home at different times, and a simple weekday meal can quickly become another decision to manage.

That is the gap Col’Cacchio GO is designed to address. Rather than building the format around a single type of meal, the menu brings pizzas, pastas and salads into one takeaway, collection and delivery offering, with options for both individual meals and food that can be shared around the table.

For Group CEO Etienne Pieterse, the thinking is less about making dinner faster for the sake of it and more about adapting the business to the way households now live.

“Families are not necessarily sitting down at the same time, wanting the same thing or planning dinner hours in advance anymore,” says Pieterse. “Our job is to understand those shifts and find ways to make Col’Cacchio fit more naturally into people’s lives, without losing the quality and experience the brand has always stood for.”

It’s part of a broader evolution for a business founded in Cape Town in 1992. The traditional restaurant remains central to Col’Cacchio, but GO gives the brand a way to serve customers on the evenings when sitting down at a restaurant is simply not realistic.

Dinner that fits the journey home

Convenience also looks different from household to household. For someone already driving home from work or collecting children from an afternoon activity, collection can fit into a journey that is already happening. For someone finishing work at home, helping with homework or getting children ready for the next day, delivery may remove one more task from the evening.

“Convenience is not only about speed,” says Pieterse. “Sometimes it is about removing friction. If dinner can fit around the family rather than the family having to reorganise the evening around dinner, that has real value.”

Not every evening needs to be solved in the same way. Some nights allow time to cook, others are made for eating out, and some simply need a practical answer that still gives everyone a chance to sit down together.

Where to find Col’Cacchio GO

The first Col’Cacchio GO opened in Westlake, Cape Town, in April 2025. The group’s current directory lists nine GO locations, eight in South Africa and one in Mauritius.

South African locations include Westlake and the Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town; Mackeurtan Avenue and Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal; Benmore Gardens, Waterfall and Three Rivers in Gauteng; and Oliver Road in Kimberley. The Mauritius location is at Tribeca Mall.

Contact details, opening hours and ordering options for each location are available through the Col’Cacchio GO directory.

The question of what’s for dinner is not going anywhere. The opportunity lies in making the answer easier to find.
