KWAZULU-NATAL — Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has strongly condemned the fatal Eshowe Boxer Superstore shooting in KwaZulu-Natal, in which three female managers were reportedly killed following an internal disciplinary process.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the Minister expressed profound shock and concern over the violent incident. She has formally called upon law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is swiftly served for the victims and their grieving families.
Highlighting the tragic timing of the event, Minister Meth noted the broader implications for workplace safety and mental well-being.
“This incident happened no less than five days after World Mental Health Day on 10 October. We extend our deepest sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and all colleagues of the victims during this devastating time. No person should ever fear for their life or personal safety while carrying out their duties and responsibilities in the workplace,” Minister Meth said.
The Minister’s remarks arrive amid renewed national calls for the establishment of safe and healthy working environments, ensuring that employees can execute their duties without the looming fear of violence or intimidation.
In response to the tragedy, the Department of Employment and Labour is encouraging ongoing, open dialogue between management, labour representatives, and employees. The department emphasized that fostering positive workplace relationships is critical to resolving grievances constructively before they escalate.
Furthermore, employers are being urged to strengthen their Employee Wellness Programmes. The department stressed the importance of ensuring that workers have reliable access to adequate mental health support systems. Employees are also encouraged to actively make use of these programmes to help them navigate workplace stress, conflict, and personal challenges.
Concluding her statement, Minister Meth issued a direct appeal to the general public. She asked citizens to refrain from circulating graphic footage of the incident on social media and in the press, urging the public to respect the privacy and grief of the affected families during this difficult time.
