FREE STATE — A coordinated series of Free State illegal mining arrests has dealt a significant blow to illicit syndicates in the Lejweleputswa District, resulting in the recovery of more than 200 kilograms of gold-bearing material. The ongoing crackdown, driven by Operation Prosper, highlights an intensified multidisciplinary approach to reclaiming mining hotspots from criminal networks.
Spokespersons for the South African Police Service (SAPS) detailed that the operation relies on a robust partnership between SAPS, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), and private mine security. According to Operation Prosper spokespersons, this joint task team is utilizing crime intelligence to target and dismantle the illicit mining networks operating within the region.
The most substantial seizure occurred in Welkom, where law enforcement apprehended two foreign nationals, aged 25 and 36. The suspects were discovered in possession of an estimated 157.1kg of suspected gold-bearing material (GBM), alongside equipment presumed to be used in the illegal extraction process. Both men face charges of trespassing and possession of gold-bearing material.
Operations subsequently extended to Odendaalsrus, yielding the arrest of three male suspects aged 46, 48, and 54. Similar to the Welkom bust, these individuals were caught with 50.1kg of suspected GBM and mining equipment. They have also been charged with trespassing and possession of the illicit mineral.
In the Theunissen policing area, authorities arrested a 36-year-old female for trespassing and contravening the Immigration Act. Additionally, eight other suspects, ranging in age from 25 to 33, were apprehended for trespassing on the same mining premises.
Across all three locations, police successfully confiscated the recovered gold-bearing material along with five spades, one pickaxe, and one shovel used in the commission of the crimes.
Law enforcement agencies maintain that these intelligence-led operations are part of a broader, decisive strategy to eradicate illegal mining. Spokespersons for the task team reiterated their ongoing commitment to disrupting these illicit activities and ensuring the security of the region’s mineral resources.
