Firefighters continue to battle relentless flames on Table Mountain as wildfires, which broke out earlier this week, remain uncontrolled. The blaze has consumed large areas of vegetation, threatening nearby residential areas, hiking trails, and iconic landmarks.
Fire Spreads Despite Efforts
The fire, believed to have started near Rhodes Memorial, rapidly spread due to strong winds and dry conditions. Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, along with volunteers and aerial support, have been working tirelessly to contain the flames. However, the rugged terrain and shifting winds have made firefighting efforts extremely challenging.
Several structures near the University of Cape Town (UCT) have been damaged, including historic buildings and conservation sites. Residents in surrounding areas, including Vredehoek and Gardens, have been advised to remain vigilant as embers pose a risk of further outbreaks.
Evacuations and Closures
Authorities have evacuated parts of UCT as a precaution, while popular tourist spots such as the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway remain closed. Hiking trails on Lion’s Head and Devil’s Peak have also been shut down for safety reasons.
The South African National Parks (SANParks) has urged the public to avoid the area and report any new flare-ups. “We are prioritizing the safety of residents and our teams on the ground,” said a SANParks spokesperson.
Cause of the Fire Under Investigation
While the exact cause remains unknown, officials suspect human activity may have played a role. Cape Town’s dry summer and frequent winds create ideal conditions for wildfires, and authorities have warned against illegal burning or discarded cigarettes.
Community and International Support
Local communities have rallied to support firefighters, donating water, food, and supplies. International assistance, including specialized aircraft, has been requested to help combat the blaze.
As the fire continues to burn, officials remain hopeful that cooler evening temperatures and additional reinforcements will help bring the situation under control. However, with the fire still active, the threat to property and biodiversity remains high.
How to Help
Residents are encouraged to:
-
Avoid the area to allow emergency teams to work.
-
