Lesotho Deploys 75-Ton Dredging Machine to Combat Severe Water Crisis and Ageing Infrastructure

MASERU, Lesotho — Grappling with a compounding water crisis fueled by prolonged climate-induced drought, extreme heat, and ageing infrastructure, the Kingdom of Lesotho has launched a decisive intervention to protect its reputation as the “water tower of Africa.” To address severe siltation in critical reservoirs, authorities have taken delivery of a specialized 75-ton cutter suction dredging machine, marking a turning point for drought-stricken southern districts desperate for relief.

Following years of unending supply challenges, residents in severely affected areas like Mafeteng have demanded urgent government action to end their ongoing water woes. The arrival of the heavy machinery is designed to tackle these exact issues by removing accumulated sediment that has crippled reservoir capacities across the region.

In its first major assignment, the cutter suction dredger will be deployed to the Rasebala Dam. Over a span of approximately six months, the machine is expected to extract around 900,000 cubic meters of sand. This massive desiltation effort is critical; the local water treatment plant was originally designed to process 3.3 megaliters per day but, due to siltation, has recently been delivering only about 1.8 megaliters. By clearing the dam, authorities aim to restore its functionality and secure the local water supply.

“This machine is going to help us take out sand that is now in most of our dams, including Katse, which is already experiencing significant siltation,” a government spokesperson explained, expressing optimism over the project’s kickoff. Operations will commence at Rasebala before expanding to other vital dams across the northern and southern districts.

Looking beyond immediate relief, officials are strategizing for long-term economic benefits. A spokesperson highlighted that while the current priority is maximizing the capacity of existing dams, the next phase aims to fully tap into the water economy. The Lesotho Highlands Water Project continues to be a cornerstone of this strategy, with ongoing infrastructure developments designed to supply surrounding villages with reliable water access within the year.

Furthermore, authorities are developing comprehensive master plans to transform water infrastructure into multi-purpose assets. These plans envision large-scale irrigation systems, commercial fisheries, enhanced potable water networks, and new tourism activities, all structured to attract significant domestic and international investment.

Despite these advancements, the national water utility remains highly vigilant regarding the anticipated El Niño weather phenomenon. The expected drought conditions pose a massive threat to an already fragile raw water network.

Utility officials confirmed that the capital, Maseru—home to the majority of the Basotho population they serve—is currently safe because its supply is drawn from the Mohale Dam, which holds sufficient capacity. However, the El Niño risk remains a severe threat to other vulnerable district centers where water resources are far more precarious.

By combining immediate mechanical intervention with long-term strategic planning, Lesotho hopes to safeguard its vital water resources against an increasingly unpredictable climate.
