MAPUTO, Mozambique — In a major leap forward for regional medical infrastructure, Mozambique and China have officially broken ground on a newly funded National Surgical Center in Maputo. The landmark health initiative highlights the deepening bilateral cooperation between the two countries and is designed to significantly expand local access to specialized treatments and complex disease management.
Attended by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique Zheng Xuan, the recent groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of a massive construction effort. Spanning more than 20,000 square meters, the expansive project encompasses one primary surgical center building alongside two utility structures.
Once completed, the eight-story facility will serve as a comprehensive medical hub. According to project specifications, the center will house 14 operating rooms, a 19-bed intensive care unit, and inpatient wards with a total capacity of 456 beds. Additionally, the hospital will offer critical support services, including emergency and trauma care, advanced medical imaging, diagnostic laboratories, and a pharmacy.
President Chapo praised the initiative as a transformative development for the nation’s public health system. Highlighting the enduring alliance between the two countries, he noted that the partnership has long been rooted in mutual respect, political trust, and a joint pursuit of developmental solutions.
“Today, this friendship translates once again into an investment that will have a direct impact on the lives of thousands of Mozambican families,” Chapo stated during the ceremony.
Echoing this sentiment, Ambassador Zheng Xuan reaffirmed China’s dedication to supporting the southern African nation’s healthcare sector. Xuan noted that Beijing has always prioritized public health and views its assistance to Mozambique as a vital component of their international cooperation. This ongoing support extends beyond just infrastructure development; it includes the continuous dispatching of medical teams, specialized training programs, and the supply of essential medical equipment and medicines.
Ultimately, the National Surgical Center is projected to drastically elevate the country’s capacity to deliver advanced surgical procedures and critical care, cementing a lasting legacy of healthcare collaboration between the two nations.
