For much of the year, migratory songbirds were treated as temporary visitors to the tropics. They arrived from the north, spent the winter, and departed again. Ornithologists paid more attention to their journeys and breeding grounds than to the months they passed farther south. The birds were often described as transients, moving through tropical forests without becoming part of them. What they did there, and how firmly they occupied those places, remained poorly understood.
Years of catching, banding, and watching them suggested a different account. In the forests of southern Mexico, individual birds returned to familiar patches and defended feeding territories. They were regular members of tropical bird communities for months at a time. A bird that appeared to be a passing visitor might return to the same small area year after year. Its life in the tropics was structured, local, and essential to its survival. Migration could not be explained only as an escape from northern winters. Its origins might instead lie in dispersal from warmer regions, as birds gradually extended their ranges toward seasonal food and breeding opportunities.
John Hilton Rappole, who died on June 30th, aged 79, pursued this argument for much of his career. It became known as the dispersal theory of bird migration. The theory challenged a long-standing explanation for why birds crossed continents. His commitment to it reflected his approach to science. He relied on sustained field observation, questioned established assumptions, and was prepared to defend an idea over many years. He was less interested in producing a tidy account than in finding one that matched what birds actually did.
He had not planned to become an ornithologist. Born in Jamestown, New York, in 1946, he studied pre-medicine at Colgate University. A bird study in the 1960s changed his direction. The work offered a form of inquiry that suited him: long hours outdoors, repeated observation, and questions whose answers could not be found in a laboratory or textbook alone. After three years in the army, including service as an artillery officer, he returned to graduate work in vertebrate zoology at the University of Minnesota.
From 1973 to 1975, he worked between the Welder Wildlife Refuge in Texas and the Tuxtla Mountains of Veracruz. His team captured and banded more than 30,000 birds from over 150 species. The work was physically repetitive and scientifically demanding. Mist nets had to be checked, birds handled carefully, measurements recorded, and individuals marked before release. Much of the significance became apparent only when a banded bird was caught again. The scale of the project was considerable, though its main value came from repeated encounters with the same birds in the same places. Migrants once described as wandering intruders proved to be settled winter residents with defined territories.
That finding helped shape what he called the southern-home theory. Instead of viewing the tropics mainly as a refuge used during the northern winter, he argued that many migratory lineages had originated there. Birds had expanded northward to exploit seasonal abundance, then returned to their older range. The theory was difficult to prove in full, and it placed him at odds with more established accounts. He continued to refine it through field studies, comparative evidence, and later books intended for both specialists and general readers.
Fieldwork remained central to his research. He later led five expeditions into the sub-Himalayan region of Myanmar, where his teams documented more than 400 bird species, expanded the known ranges of poorly understood birds, and described a new scimitar-babbler, Napothera naungmungensis. The expeditions took him into remote areas where ornithological records were sparse and travel could be difficult. Cataloging the region’s birds required the same habits that had shaped his earlier work: patience, careful description, and a willingness to return to evidence that did not fit prevailing expectations. The teams also collected data on avian malaria, seasonal movement, and changes in bird distribution.
For 20 years he worked as a research scientist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, later becoming emeritus. He wrote 16 books and dozens of papers. He developed transmitter harnesses for tracking birds and worked on migration, tropical ecology, disease, and shifting species ranges. He was drawn to practical problems: tracking devices had to remain attached without impeding flight. He was also prepared to revise his conclusions. After initially proposing that migratory birds could carry West Nile virus into new regions, he helped show that the virus’s spread across the Americas did not follow their migration routes. His science moved between large evolutionary questions and small technical details. Much of his work returned to the same principle: migratory birds could not be understood by studying only one part of their annual cycle.
Colleagues described him as rigorous, generous, and modest about his standing. He listened carefully to scientists, field assistants, and people outside his profession. He valued directness and expected honesty. His knowledge could be formidable, though he did not make a display of it. Those who met him were more likely to encounter questions, stories, and close attention than a recital of achievements. His 2024 memoir, Migration Mysteries, included failed expeditions, institutional frustrations, errors, and hazards alongside its scientific discoveries. He called it a biography of an idea, though it was also an account of the persistence required to keep following one.
Away from research, he often returned to the woods and waters around Jamestown. He fished, walked the gorges, explored creeks, and told stories at the family cabin. Nature was not divided neatly between his professional and private life. The same interest that took him to tropical forests was present in a pond, a local trail, or a bird seen near home. He learned Spanish through his years in Mexico and became interested in migration as a human experience as well as a biological one. In a public talk late in life, he connected the movement of birds with his own departure from home and with the movement of people seeking opportunity elsewhere.
His favorite passage came from the Book of Job: “Speak to the Earth and let it teach you.” For more than half a century, he followed that instruction, often by returning to the same places and waiting to see which birds came back. For him, their return was never merely repetition. It was evidence: one marked bird, in one familiar patch of forest, adding another fact to a question that had occupied most of his life.
