Conservationists, researchers, horticultural professionals, policymakers, students, and tree enthusiasts from across South Africa will gather at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden for the inaugural South African Tree Symposium (SATS), an event dedicated to advancing knowledge, promoting collaboration, and celebrating the remarkable value of trees in sustaining life and protecting biodiversity.
Hosted through a collaborative partnership between Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and the Botanical Society of South Africa, the symposium will bring together leading experts from government, academia, conservation organisations, and the private sector to explore innovative approaches to tree conservation, urban forestry, indigenous knowledge, climate resilience, and sustainable landscape management.
Trees are among South Africa’s greatest natural assets. They provide habitat for wildlife, improve air and water quality, store carbon, reduce the impacts of climate change, support livelihoods, and contribute significantly to the country’s cultural and ecological heritage. Yet many indigenous tree species face increasing pressure from habitat loss, invasive species, unsustainable land use, and changing climatic conditions. The South African Tree Symposium seeks to address these challenges by creating a platform where science, conservation, policy, and community action intersect.
The symposium programme will feature keynote presentations, technical sessions, panel discussions, and interactive networking opportunities. Topics will include indigenous tree conservation, threatened tree species, urban greening initiatives, restoration ecology, propagation and cultivation techniques, tree health, environmental education, and the role of trees in achieving South Africa’s biodiversity and climate goals. Delegates will also have the opportunity to engage with leading researchers and practitioners who are actively shaping the future of tree conservation in South Africa.
A special highlight of the symposium will be the launch of the South African Protected Trees Booklet, an educational resource designed to improve awareness of legally protected tree species and promote their conservation throughout the country. The publication aims to support environmental practitioners, educators, municipalities, students, and members of the public by providing accessible information on South Africa’s protected trees and their significance.
The event also provides an important platform to strengthen partnerships between government, conservation organisations, academic institutions, industry, and local communities. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, SATS aims to inspire practical
