September 2026 finds spring planting underway across most of South Africa, and H2O Guru has responded by moving its irrigation package back to the top of its service list. The laboratory business, based in Pretoria, is urging farms, smallholdings, nurseries, estates and packhouses to test the water they intend to pump all summer now, before it feeds a full season of crops, instead of waiting for trouble to surface in the field.
Behind the recommendation sits a plain, practical logic rather than any alarm. Farms here irrigate from boreholes, dams, rivers, canals, storage tanks and recycled sources, and the composition of that water seldom holds steady. As H2O Guru explains on its own website, chemistry can differ markedly from one site to the next, even between neighbouring properties, since groundwater is shaped by geology, borehole depth, recharge conditions, nearby agriculture and industry, sewage systems, and the materials used in borehole construction and plumbing. Municipal and stored supplies drift too, affected by pipework, tanks, corrosion and blending with other sources. A sample pulled last summer, then, tells you little about what the pump is delivering this spring, and that is precisely the case for scheduled water testing in place of the occasional check.
What the irrigation package measures
The Irrigation Water package is listed by H2O Guru at R1 885 including VAT, and laboratory results and analysis currently take roughly five to seven working days. Testing is performed under SANS241 by a SANAS accredited laboratory that operates under facility number T0647.
Because drinkable water and irrigable water pose two separate questions, the parameter list for irrigation runs deliberately wider than a straightforward potability screen. It reports EC, pH, COD, SAR, Langelier, Ryznar, TSS, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, alkalinity, carbonate, bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, boron, manganese, iron, phosphorus, faecal coliforms and TDS.
A number of these readings bear directly on the grower. Total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity describe the salt load the soil must take up over a season, while the sodium adsorption ratio speaks to soil structure. The Langelier and Ryznar indices flag scaling and corrosion tendency, which is as much a drip line and pump concern as an agronomic one. Sodium, chloride and boron are tracked because crops tolerate them very differently. The nitrogen and phosphorus values reveal what nutrients the water is supplying before a single dose of fertiliser goes on. Faecal coliforms feature on the list because irrigation water so often reaches produce destined to be eaten.
Test first, then decide
H2O Guru sums up its method as test first: pin down the real problem, then treat only what actually needs treating. It applies that same reasoning to its drinking water work, observing that an analysis exists not merely to generate laboratory values but to identify what affects health, taste, appearance, plumbing, appliances and the performance of any treatment system. For irrigation, that means selecting filtration, conditioning or blending from measured results rather than guesswork, and sidestepping equipment that was never required to begin with.
This habit of measuring before spending helps explain the place accredited water laboratories hold within the agricultural supply chain. A laboratory report stands as a defensible document. It can go to an agronomist, an irrigation designer, a packhouse auditor or a bank, and it rests on nobody’s impression of how the water looks in a bucket.
Sampling, couriers and the 24 hour rule
Half the exercise is taking the sample correctly, and H2O Guru sets out its sampling procedure in the open. It advises drawing from a clean tap wired straight to the borehole rather than from a storage tank, unless the tank is itself the subject of the test. Run that tap at a steady flow for about five to ten minutes to flush old water from the pipes, then wipe it with an alcohol swab or bleach solution and rinse it with the source water.
Use clean plastic PET bottles for containers, preferably the type that mineral or still water comes in. Glass, beverage, milk and fruit juice bottles will not do, and five litre bottles carry an extra R100 handling fee. Each test calls for two 750ml bottles or two 500ml bottles. Rinse the bottle and cap several times with the source water, fill to the top leaving as little air as possible, keep the bottle off the tap, and then label it.
From there, temperature and timing matter. Samples belong in a cooler box or a fridge, out of the sun, and are best wrapped in a black plastic bag or set inside a small box. They need to reach the laboratory within 24 hours of being drawn. Where a client cannot arrange that alone, H2O Guru will sample on the premises through one of its own representatives or collect by courier, and it runs courier services nationwide. Both options carry fees.
A full range of packages behind the irrigation service
Irrigation is just one line on a longer menu. The company’s SANS241 drinking water packages begin with Microbiology Only at R945 including VAT, which covers heterotrophic plate count, total coliforms, faecal coliforms and E. coli, move up through Chemistry Only at R1 750 including VAT, and reach the combined Chemistry and Microbiology package at R2 300 including VAT. The chemistry packages report EC, pH, SAR, Langelier, Ryznar, turbidity, colour, odour, TDS, TSS, free chlorine, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, acidity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, manganese, iron and aluminium. Turnaround sits at about five to seven working days for the single discipline packages and seven to ten working days for the combined one.
Bottled and purified water is dealt with on its own under SANS1657 at R3 150 including VAT, carrying a broader metals and microbiology list that takes in barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, antimony, arsenic, selenium, mercury, molybdenum and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with a turnaround near ten to twelve working days. Waste and effluent water is priced on enquiry and tested for chemical and microbiological parameters used in process control, disposal and legislative compliance, on the understanding that effluent released to the environment eventually finds its way into surface and ground water.
Additional organisms can be added to the standard packages on request, among them Legionella, Listeria, Pseudomonas species, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio species, yeast, mould, cholera, Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter and Bacillus cereus. Pricing and terms for these are quoted case by case, as specialist water labs typically handle non routine determinands.
Boreholes, banks and property transfers
Spring brings a rush of property transfers as well, and H2O Guru issues borehole bank compliance certificates as part of its work. Any property sale that depends on bank financing needs a bank certificate, and each South African bank sets its own conditions for issuing a borehole yield test certificate. Where a borehole falls short of those conditions, the financing can be jeopardised.
