EASTERN CAPE — A total of 208 suspects are now in police custody following the recent Eastern Cape illegal immigration protests, which triggered widespread demonstrations by residents frustrated with undocumented migration. Authorities launched synchronized law enforcement operations across the region to curb criminal activity, preserve public stability, and guarantee the safety of local communities during the unrest.
Speaking on Tuesday, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane provided an update on the regional security climate. He confirmed that while the situation remains largely stable, security clusters have been placed on high alert. Officers are actively tracking developments throughout the province, standing prepared to intervene rapidly and decisively should any threats to public peace or order emerge.
Addressing the root of the demonstrations, the provincial administration recognized the valid anxieties expressed by locals regarding undocumented immigrants. However, Mabuyane stressed that the actual enforcement of national immigration statutes is strictly the mandate of designated state authorities.
