EASTERN CAPE – A 62-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear before the Ngcobo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August 2026, facing charges of attempted murder, police attack, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The court appearance follows a tense, intelligence-driven operation in the Eastern Cape that resulted in the suspect opening fire on responding law enforcement officers.
The arrest was executed on 21 August 2026 at approximately 22:15 in the Kuntsimbini Locality, within the Qulunqu Administration area of Ngcobo. According to representatives from the Mthatha Public Order Police (POP) and Provincial Crime Intelligence (CI), the joint operation was specifically initiated to address a high rate of stock theft in the region.
Upon arriving at the target residence, police officials allegedly identified themselves and requested permission to enter. In response, the suspect reportedly began discharging a firearm from inside the house. The individual then opened a burglar door and continued to shoot at the responding officers.
During the exchange, a police official narrowly survived a potentially fatal incident when a projectile struck near the shoulder area. The officer sustained no injuries due to the protection provided by a standard-issue ballistic vest.
Following the neutralization of the threat, authorities conducted a search of the premises. Investigators recovered a 9mm firearm with its serial number intact, 12 rounds of ammunition, a single 9mm cartridge, a black holster, and a projectile. The 62-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested on the spot and remains in custody pending the formal court proceedings.
