WESTERN CAPE – The alleged mastermind behind the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate councillor Sinovuyo Miranda Dyokwe has been arrested by Western Cape police, marking a significant breakthrough in the high-profile investigation.
The 37-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Saturday, 25 July 2026, in Parklands. The apprehension was the result of a joint, intelligence-driven operation involving Provincial Serious Violent Crime Investigation (SVCI) detectives and the South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force, following a period during which the suspect had allegedly been evading arrest.
This development follows an intensive investigation prompted by actionable information provided by members of the public regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased had been subjected to extortion and was reportedly forced to pay protection money. After she refused to continue making these payments, threats were allegedly made against her life.
The investigation revealed that on Friday, 20 June 2026, Ms Dyokwe was returning home after participating in voter registration activities in Dunoon. She was allegedly followed by two armed suspects who subsequently fatally shot her. The arrested suspect has now been positively linked to the murder through the ongoing investigative process.
During the tactical operation, law enforcement officials seized the vehicle allegedly used in the commission of the offence, along with seven cellular phones that will form part of the evidentiary record in the ongoing investigation.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026, to face formal charges of murder and extortion.
Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Luyanda Damoyi, commended the investigating team and all members involved in the operation for their dedication and perseverance. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains active, and further arrests are expected as detectives continue to pursue all individuals involved in the matter.
