Because laying physical cables to remote villages is rarely profitable for major telecommunications corporations, government facilities like rural health clinics, police stations, and educational centers have long been left in the dark. Now, orbital technology is arriving to change that reality.
At the Danie Joubert Combined School in Bethal, the consequences of this connectivity gap are visible daily. The campus struggles with limited resources, aging desks, and broken windows, but it is the unreliable internet that most severely hampers modern education. An educator and spokesperson for the school highlighted the daily frustrations faced by teachers and students alike.
“Sometimes when they have projects, they do use it, but not most of the time because we don’t have a good internet,” the school representative explained. “It does disadvantage them because if we’ve prepared a lesson for them, now we can’t do it because there’s no internet here.”
To solve these infrastructural blind spots, global tech giants are looking to the stars. Amazon has successfully carved out a market entry by teaming up with local internet service provider Herotel. This strategic move allows the e-commerce titan to leapfrog Elon Musk’s Starlink, which has previously clashed with the nation’s electronic communications ownership laws.
South African regulations mandate that telecommunications structures include a 30% ownership stake held by historically disadvantaged individuals or groups. Addressing the market entry, a regulatory spokesperson confirmed that Amazon navigated these requirements successfully by playing by the rules.
“Amazon obviously followed what we have been saying publicly,” the regulatory spokesperson stated. “They’ve identified a licensee which I can confirm they’re in good standing. We do have our own rules in the country where there will be a requirement in your structure to have a 30% ownership of historically disadvantaged individuals or groups.”
Beyond corporate maneuvering, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are uniquely positioned to serve areas far removed from dense urban mobile towers. A broadband technology spokesperson noted that studies indicate rural communities are actually “bound to get more services” from these orbital networks. As the demand for universal connectivity grows, South African regulators are currently finalizing the comprehensive rulebook for LEO satellite operators. The ultimate goal is to unlock fresh capital investment, stimulate market competition, and ensure that no rural community is left on the sidelines of the digital revolution.
