Barberton Crackdown: Police Raid Illegal Mining Operation After Fatalities Uncovered

BARBERTON, Mpumalanga – A coordinated police operation in Mpumalanga has resulted in the dismantling of an illegal mining camp in Barberton, following the recovery of multiple bodies that authorities suspect are tied to violent territorial clashes between rival syndicates.

The raid, carried out by multiple police units, targeted a location where an estimated 50 illegal miners—commonly referred to as “Zama zamas”—are believed to conduct daily operations. A police spokesperson confirmed that individuals involved in these illicit activities are frequently equipped with firearms and pose a significant threat to public safety.

Investigators recovered two bodies bearing gunshot wounds at the site, reinforcing concerns that the fatalities stem from internal conflicts within the illegal mining network. “This is more related to illegal mining,” the spokesperson noted, highlighting the direct connection between the deaths and the dangerous environment fostered by unregulated gold extraction.

During the operation, officers apprehended a single suspect found in possession of gold-bearing material. Law enforcement also seized multiple items, including a firearm believed to have been dropped by a fleeing miner, as well as numerous “pendugas”—handheld tools typically used in informal mining. Authorities stated that the confiscated equipment would be dismantled in accordance with standard procedure.

The spokesperson further revealed that illegal mining groups in the Barberton region have demonstrated the capability to infiltrate active, licensed mines—a development that has prompted closer collaboration between police and private mine security teams. “We are working closely with mine security personnel to curb the criminal activity,” the spokesperson affirmed.

The Barberton operation forms part of an escalated law enforcement response to the persistent challenge of illegal mining and its associated violence. With investigations ongoing, police have reiterated their commitment to disrupting criminal networks and restoring safety to affected communities.
